Our Top Sites For Design Inspiration: Issue 42

Fueled's London-based lead designer Rob Palmer shares a handful of inspirational websites.

Every week at Fueled, our London-based lead designer, Rob Palmer, shares a handful of inspirational websites with our teams in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. This weekly email acts as a virtual water cooler, encouraging us to congregate across time zones and discuss what brands and blogs are doing to push new trends in web design.

Type to Design

We Are Fueled Type to Design

Type to Design is an interactive site that creates a randomly generated font from characters that were submitted by designers and artists (via Instagram) for the 36 Days of Type project. Once you launch the site, just start typing! Want to switch up the design of a specific letter? Click on it and the site will select another character for you at random. If you’re a typography lover, like we are, expect to spend your entire lunch break playing around with these fun typefaces.

Anton & Irene

Anton and Irene Design

Anton and Irene describe themselves as “Former Manhattan agency directors turned Brooklyn hands-on designers.” This duo has a uniquely minimalist site that really shows off their strengths in product and UX design. On the homepage, hover over the images as they change in sequence to reveal the two designers. The large hero images and experimental scroll techniques are also a really nice touch. Be sure to check out their most recent work and take a look behind the scenes into their unique design process.

Dead Obies

Dead Obies

Just when we thought we were bored of long scroll websites, we came across this one and got excited all over again. The Dead Obies, an experimental hip-hop group from Quebec, have broken the mold when it comes to web design, as this site is anything but cookie cutter. The use of motion typography, bold colors, scroll triggered animations and light box videos make this site really stand out. Even if you can’t stand their music, you’ll enjoy their web design.

Werkstatt

Werkstatt Design

Werkstatt is an interactive design studio that delivers customized and innovative digital experiences to it’s clients. Their international website is jam packed with the best, new design trends and their long scroll portfolio pages are really unique. We love the video screen displays and scroll activated highlighting on each page, but we recommend you visit their client’s websites directly (since they're less cluttered) if you really want to see the simply stunning work Werkstatt is capable of.

B&O Play

Baku European Games

B&O Play is a Danish consumer electronics company that designs and manufactures beautiful audio products, merging the best of technology and style. Make sure to click around on this site, because every page has something different to offer. Overall, B&O Play’s web design is aesthetically pleasing and masterfully crafted, but our favorite page is the products page. They offer interactive blueprints and videos of the handcrafting process. We also love the page featuring the H6 Rapha Edition headphones, which were designed in collab with the popular British cycling brand, because the cool use of parallax scrolling becomes a real adventure.

Seeing Data

The Migration Observatory

Clever°Franke partnered with the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, the University of Leeds, and Visualising Data to find new methods of visualizing migration data. These visualizations form the foundation for an ongoing academic research into literacy of big data, spearheaded by the University of Leeds. One part of the site focuses on quantitative data taken from the 2011 census, the other is based on 7 years of news coverage on the subject. What could have been a very boring, data driven website actually turned out to be something special thanks to it’s innovative presentation, animation, and visualization of migration patterns.
