WooCommerce & Square

We made connected commerce easier for merchants

We partnered strengthened Square for WooCommerce, improving reliability, onboarding, payments, sync, and multi-channel commerce features for merchants selling online and in person.

Square for WooCommerce helps merchants connect their WooCommerce stores with Square’s payments and point-of-sale ecosystem, bringing online and in-person selling together across payments, catalog and inventory sync, orders, and customer data. Square is WooCommerce’s preferred POS partner, and Square for WooCommerce has more than 80,000 active installs.

Fueled partnered with Woo and Square to strengthen that integration. Our work began through a broader Woo relationship focused on improving extension quality and reliability, then grew into an ongoing product partnership across Woo, Square, and Fueled.

Over time, we helped stabilize the live extension, improve the merchant setup experience, extend Square capabilities inside WooCommerce, and keep the integration aligned with the future of both platforms.

Taking over a live product with real merchant stakes

Square for WooCommerce was already in market when Fueled became involved. That made the work more nuanced than starting a new plugin from scratch.

Merchants were already using the integration to run real payment, checkout, product, inventory, and sync workflows. The extension also carried the normal complexity of an established product: existing merchant feedback, inherited technical decisions, public reviews and support requests, and a need to ship improvements without disrupting stores that already depended on it.

Early work focused on reliability and stability. Our team worked through high-priority merchant-reported issues, with an emphasis on stable releases and preventing regressions. For a commerce integration, having a stable and reliable foundation matters because checkout, payment processing, product sync, and inventory are directly tied to the merchant’s ability to transact, fulfill orders, and maintain trust with customers.

We also helped move the extension away from reliance on a third-party extension framework, bringing more of the Square integration directly into Woo’s codebase. That shift supported a cleaner, more maintainable foundation for future development and made it easier for the integration to evolve alongside WooCommerce.

From extension maintenance to product partnership

With a stronger foundation in place, the relationship expanded beyond maintenance.

Square for WooCommerce sits between two active product ecosystems. Square brings deep payments, point-of-sale, and commerce capabilities. WooCommerce brings a broad merchant ecosystem and an evolving platform for building, managing, and extending online stores. Merchants bring their own signals through support requests, reviews, public feedback, and the day-to-day realities of selling across channels.

Fueled’s role was to help turn those inputs into a stronger WooCommerce integration.

That meant more than receiving a feature request and building to spec. Working closely with Woo and Square, our team defined and recommended what new capabilities should be crafted inside WooCommerce – how they should work for merchants and shoppers, where they belonged in the admin or checkout experience, what technical constraints needed to be accounted for, and how they should be tested and released.

We also brought our own recommendations to roadmap conversations, informed by merchant feedback, open source activity, support patterns, and upcoming changes across WordPress and WooCommerce. That gave Woo and Square a partner who could help keep the integration moving forward, while staying aligned with both companies’ product goals.

That mix of product strategy, UX thinking, and implementation became especially visible in the new onboarding experience.

Designing a clearer path from activation to transaction

Before the redesign, setting up Square inside WooCommerce followed a pattern common to complex plugins: configuration was spread across settings tabs, subsections, and technical fields. That structure made the extension configurable, but it also made the critical first path harder than it needed to be.

Merchants did not only need to activate a plugin. They needed to connect Square, configure the right settings, and reach the point where they could begin transacting. Every unclear step created more distance between installing the extension and using Square as part of the business’s actual selling workflow.

Fueled explored new onboarding approaches with our design team and helped create a more visual, guided setup flow. The experience guides merchants from post-activation through setup in fewer steps, keeps advanced configuration available without making it the primary path, and focuses the flow around a practical business outcome: getting merchants quickly set up for processing transactions via the Square payment gateway.

If the early reliability work strengthened the foundation, onboarding showed what the partnership could do at the product level: simplify a complex integration into a clearer merchant experience.

Turning Square capabilities into WooCommerce experiences

Gift cards were one of the clearest examples of translating Square capabilities directly into WooCommerce.

Fueled helped bring Square gift cards into WooCommerce so shoppers could buy a gift card online and use it later online or in person, redeem a gift card purchased in store through the online storefront, and split payment between a Square Gift Card and another payment method, including a credit card or Cash App Pay.

That work required more than exposing a payment option. WooCommerce already had its own gift cards extension, which meant some merchants may have already had gift card functionality on their sites. Fueled needed to help Square gift cards coexist within the broader WooCommerce ecosystem, avoiding confusing behavior or unnecessary conflicts.

The result was feature behavior that reflected how merchants and shoppers actually use gift cards across channels.

Extending payments, sync, and store operations

As the partnership continued, Fueled helped extend the integration across the workflows that matter most for connected commerce.

Payments and checkout. We helped modernize the checkout payment form through Square’s Web Payments SDK, keeping the extension aligned with Square’s current online payment infrastructure. We also supported digital wallets, Cash App Pay, and Square Discount Codes inside WooCommerce checkout. For shoppers, that means more familiar ways to pay. For merchants, it means the payment experience can keep pace with how customers already expect to buy.

Product and inventory sync. We helped improve sync for individual products, variable products, multiple product variations, inventory counts, and multiple product categories. That work matters because product data is not static for many merchants. Sizes, colors, stock levels, categories, and product details often need to stay consistent between WooCommerce and Square. Better sync reduces the risk that one system tells a different story than the other.

Store operations. We helped support order fulfillment sync between WooCommerce and Square orders for merchants who opt in. Fulfillment is where the online order becomes operational work for a store team. When fulfillment data moves more cleanly between systems, merchants can reduce manual reconciliation and keep Square closer to the day-to-day reality of their business.

Market and platform support. We contributed to expanded regional and platform support, including Square stores in Spain and digital wallet support for Australia. That work helped the integration serve a broader range of merchants while staying aligned with Square’s supported markets and payment capabilities. Square for WooCommerce now supports merchants and shoppers in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, Ireland, France, Spain, and the U.K.

Together, these improvements helped the integration better support merchants selling across channels, where small gaps between systems can create outsized operational problems.

Keeping Square for WooCommerce aligned with the future of both platforms

WooCommerce has continued to modernize how stores are built, managed, and extended. Square has continued to modernize point-of-sale and payment gateway processing experiences.  Square for WooCommerce needs to keep pace with those changes because it sits close to critical business workflows: payments, checkout, orders, inventory, and fulfillment.

Fueled helped support High-Performance Order Storage, which stores WooCommerce order data in dedicated database tables to improve performance and scalability for growing stores. For merchants, the value is not the underlying data model, it’s a faster, more scalable order infrastructure that supports the growth of their business.

We also helped support newer WooCommerce store-building and checkout experiences, including Product Blocks, Email Improvements, and Cart and Checkout Blocks. In plain terms, this work helped Square for WooCommerce remain compatible as WooCommerce modernized core store experiences, from product management and customer emails to cart and checkout.

That platform alignment is essential for a mature commerce integration. Square for WooCommerce needs to keep working not only for the WooCommerce store of today, but for the version of WooCommerce merchants are actively moving toward.

A stronger foundation for connected commerce

Square and WooCommerce are both evolving platforms. Square continues to expand how merchants accept payments, manage selling, and serve customers across channels. WooCommerce continues to improve how merchants build stores, manage checkout, and shape the buying experience. At the intersection of those systems, merchant needs and shopper expectations keep evolving, too.

That is why Square for WooCommerce cannot be treated as a build-it-once integration. It needs steady product stewardship to keep supporting how merchants sell across channels as both platforms, and the expectations around them, continue to move forward.

Fueled helps Woo and Square continue evolving the integration by bringing WordPress and WooCommerce expertise, product strategy, UX thinking, and disciplined implementation into one partnership. We stepped into an existing product with real merchant stakes, improved the foundation, made setup clearer, extended key capabilities, and helped keep the integration moving with both platforms. That collaboration continues through the ongoing work of maintaining, improving, and adapting Square for WooCommerce as both ecosystems evolve.

The result is a stronger path for merchants selling across online and in-person channels, and a clear example of how Fueled works: as a strategic partner that helps define what should be built, understands how to build it inside mature platforms, and stays accountable as the product evolves.
