A Brief History on the Fortune 500 List

Edgar P. Smith, At the time he was an assistant managing editor for Fortune,  first created the list in 1955. The first list only included companies hat were in the manufacturing, mining, and energy sectors. This left out some major companies because of that specification. The first to top the Fortune 500 list was General Motors with annual revenues of $9.8 billion. In 1995 however, they changed the requirements for the list and allowed companies in the service sector to also be apart of the list.  This allowed Walmart to rank fourth that year and AT&T who ranked fifth.
