It’s so cute! That was at least my first impression of Finch when I saw it’s cute icon of an adorable bird staring at me. The app follows through with this aesthetic with loads of cutesy, colorful graphics that set it apart from so many other habit trackers.
In a way, Finch is similar to the old Tomogachi’s I grew up on. You have al little pet that you need to check in on and help grow. But rather being a game, you check in and help you little animal grow by completing tasks and growing your habits.
The app will surface daily goals and exercises for you to do to help promote self help. Do some slow breathing, reflect on your day, set goals, or perform a random act of kindness. All of this benefits your in-app pet.
Find isn’t just for maintenance of yourself, but rather can help when you need it. There are selfcare exercises for all different moods to help your anxiety, when you’re panicking, when you need to slow down your racing thoughts, or when you need to clear your mind to get some sleep.
To further amplify the gamification, of the app is a whole store. You can use the points you earn from your habits and tasks to accessories and customize your pet. Outfit them with new clothes, a cute hat, and more. Its personality can be changed too as you do stuff with them. You can view an in-depth personality profile on your pet that shows their strengths, as well as things like weight, height, etc.
Gamification has been an easy way to increase engagements in apps and I think Finch has done a great job here using that aspect for good, rather than bad. This is reinforced by the adorable characters and graphics that make you feel like playing a game, rather than battering yourself. With App Store-touted events and regular updates with fresh content, Finch is an awesome way to start off the new year
But enough about other people's apps.
