MysteryVibe’s Crescendo is the world’s first bendable smart vibrator.
MysteryVibe consulted Fueled to create a tactile app experience that allows users to create custom vibes and download vibes created by others. The development process allowed us to do a deep investigation how to create an intuitive design and empower users of all genders and orientations.
We were tasked with developing a revolutionary companion app that serves as a controller for the Crescendo device, which connects to a user’s phone via Bluetooth. The app had to complement the hardware capabilities without placing too many demands on the user.
The Crescendo is, at its core, a vibrator. In building the app, we had the opportunity to incorporate instinct, touch, color, and motion to enhance the usability of the toy in an appealing, tactile user interface.
Knowing that this product would serve a userbase that skewed female, our team worked to create sex-positive design. We created a supportive, open space for women to provide candid input in the form of a hands-on focus group, surveys, and interviews. The Fueled team listened to feedback and used their input to shape the gesture-based UI that was discreet and stylish. The word we kept hearing was “empowering,” and our design team worked to honor that goal.
While the makers of Crescendo wanted to create an immersive experience for users, it was important that the app didn’t place too many demands on the user. It needed to be simple to navigate, especially for a user who might not be looking at the app.
We devised a large target area to be used for navigation in the test phase. The center of the phone would essentially act as a control panel. The goal was to allow the user to easily reach for a new vibe experience with just one hand.
The prototype envisioned a layout in which users could fetch vibes by swiping up, then dropping the selected vibe into the center of the screen.
We based the design aesthetic to appeal to users across the gender spectrum, avoiding traditionally phallic design tropes. We worked with MysteryVibe to evolve the existing brand by focusing on natural textures and colors, and sensory propinquity — resulting in the iconic dancing vibes
To key in the right feeling, we generated color stories that would at once identify the toy paired with the app and also provide a pleasing gradient.
